Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)
Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is an evidence-base program that works in the home to support vulnerable and isolated mothers in their critical role as their child’s first and most important teacher. HIPPY strengthens families and communities by empowering mothers to actively participate in Canadian society and prepare their children for success in school and life. We started the Regina HIPPY program in 2020 and the program has been successfully running for the past 3 years.
In the program, the RIWC HIPPY Home Visitor works with the mother enrolled into the program for 1 hour per week, one-on-one, in the mother's (parent’s) home or virtually for 30 weeks role-playing the curriculum activities. The mother/father will then spend 15-20 minutes per day teaching the same curriculum to the child.
The program has been highly effective and our clients have seen tremendous confidence and skills increase in their children, to be better prepared for schooling in Canada. The curriculum activities are organized around five concepts or skill areas (domains) — math, science, motor, language and literacy- and this helps the kids (especially newcomer kids) and parents to get used to vocabulary and terms used in the school system as well.
We provide the curriculum material, including weekly activities, story books, and a tablet (if needed- loaned out to client) free of cost as part of the program. The program runs for 30 weeks from September (2023)- June (2024), in sync with the school academic year.
*The curriculum is in English
